10 inflight movie highlights for July

Flying during July? With more than 200 films and 500 hours of TV onboard Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights, it’s hard to know what to watch first

Here are 10 great moments, stories and trivia from this month’s onboard programming.

1. Alicia Vikander as the new Lara Croft

Alicia Vikander steps into one of the most iconic video game characters ever as the new Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Vikander talks about her preparation for the role on The Tonight Show.

2. Steven Soderergh on the future of filmmaking

Director Steven Soderbergh filmed nearly all of his latest film, Unsane, on an iPhone. The director discusses his reasoning and the future of filmmaking in the interview here.

3. Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson as 2 Dope Queens

In 2015, Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson became podcast stars with 2 Dope Queens, a show that highlights diversity in stand-up comedy. The two hosts discuss how their podcast become a four-episode HBO comedy special on The Daily Show. 

4. Japanese animation collection

This month Cathay Pacific is featuring a special collection of Japanese animated films. Check out the music video from Garden of Words, a heart-rending romance by Your Name director Makoto Shinkai, before catching the film onboard this month.

5. Borg vs McEnroe in Wimbledon

Borg/McEnroe is a dramatic retelling of the rivalry between tennis stars Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, which led to the amazing finals match at Wimbledon in 1980. See clips from the real game below.

7. Typewriter renaissance man

As well as being one of the most popular actors working today, Tom Hanks is also a typewriter aficionado. Hanks is one of the celebrities who talks about his love for the machine in documentary California Typewriter, onboard this month.

8. Dante Lam goes to war with Operation Red Sea

Operation Red Sea is an epic war film and one of the highest-grossing Chinese films ever made. See a trailer for the slam-bang action spectacular below.

9. Robots destroy Sydney in Pacific Rim: Uprising

The giant robots are back in Pacific Rim: Uprising, the explosive sequel to the hit sci-fi film. Director Steven S DeKnight breaks down a battle scene set in Sydney in the clip below.
