With a new opening practically every five minutes, it was perhaps inevitable that Soho would enjoy recognition as the territory’s most exciting neighbourhood. A firm favourite with tourists and locals alike, the eclectic food, drink and nightlife scene is famous for its 24/7 appeal and endless stream of international revellers. Openings in 2018 range from fine-dining izakaya Fukuro to the carnivorous menu at Meats, while the bar scene has welcomed underground Japanese bar Yojimbo and intimate cocktail venue The Wise King.

Most Exciting Neighbourhood in Hong Kong Shortlist

Chai Wan

At the eastern end of the MTR’s Island Line, Chai Wan has largely been a high-density residential district. Now, it’s experiencing a rise in popularity as a hiking gateway and creative hub with several local galleries in former industrial buildings, and attracting upmarket residential developments thanks to its great transport connections.

Sai Ying Pun

High Street might sound posh, but it’s really a narrow street that’s put Sai Ying Pun in the consciousness of weekenders seeking the newest hipster restaurants, craft beer spots and cafes. The prevalence of local markets and small family-run businesses also maintains the area’s strong local vibe.

Sham Shui Po

Street food, fashion, electronics and toy shops populate the crowded streets in this dynamic working-class north Kowloon district.

Tai Ping Shan Street

After a shady past as an opium den and ground zero for Hong Kong’s worst plague in the late 1800s, the area surrounding one of Sheung Wan’s oldest streets has reinvented itself as an artistic delight – with artisanal cafes, galleries and floral boutiques among the low-rise blocks.

Wan Chai

It’s where old and new collide: with a popular local wet market just next to the revamped pedestrian shopping and dining strip Lee Tung Avenue. Still hungry? Head to the Star Street precinct for some of the city’s best dining.
