As China’s global financial hub, Shanghai has become one of the world’s top business travel destinations. But beyond the confines of office hours, the city itself has quite a lot to offer, and it’s worth staying an extra day or two after your meetings to see some of it for yourself.
After filling up on the city’s famous xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) and its scruffy cousin shengjianbao (pan-fried pork buns), travellers can museum-hop along West Bund, the city’s booming art district. At sunset, visit one of the many Bund-side bars and wind down the day with your favourite drink and snap a selfie with the futuristic Pudong skyline in the background.
Cathay Pacific offers plenty of flight and hotel packages, easing the planning process and helping you save for your next Shanghai trip.
The Middle House
Deal: Late check-out; breakfast included
The Middle House, the fourth property of The House Collective by Swire Hotels, is located on Shanghai’s always-bustling Nanjing Xi Lu. Italian architect Piero Lissoni’s signature minimalist aesthetics are mixed with traditional Chinese design elements to create a hotel that serves as the ‘middle ground’ between East and West. All 111 rooms and public spaces feature Lissoni’s cross-cultural interpretations. Meanwhile, more than 700 original artworks are prominently displayed throughout its two buildings.
In the mood for more art? Encounters Across Cultures: Seeds of Life – The House Collective’s inaugural art programme – will be stopping off at The Middle House in September. Like The Opposite House and The Upper House, Swiss artist Katja Loher will create a unique installation for the property.
