Winner: Dragonfly
Hot on the heels of some of the city’s most anticipated openings, including Ophelia, Iron Fairies and Dear Lilly, comes Ashley Sutton’s sixth Hong Kong-based project. In true Sutton style, Dragonfly – though relatively small in size – is an extravagant den of bold themes and whimsical design inspired by the 19th century art nouveau style of Louis Tiffany. Tucked away in the new Tai Kwun heritage centre, the bar offers an eclectic menu of cocktails, such as the strawberry gin creation Mucha’s Muse, alongside a menu of fusion tapas.

Bar De Luxe
Found within Wyndham Street’s Attire House – a men’s lifestyle and tailoring den – Bar de Luxe is a Japanese cocktail bar from Hidetsugu Ueno, the master behind Tokyo’s renowned Bar High Five.
Foxglove
Take one part Mad Men, one squeeze of jet-set chic and a dash of speakeasy glamour and you arrive at this hidden bar in Central, with an eclectic cocktail menu and live jazz.
Ping Pong 129 Gintonería
It’s in a basement, but this bar features double-height ceilings, giving it an airy, industrial-chic vibe. Soak in the retro ping-pong theme and its frequent live music shows while selecting from an extensive international gin list.
Quinary
This Hollywood Road bar, listed in the prestigious World’s 50 Best Bars for five years, takes its cocktails seriously. Don’t be surprised if your drink arrives balanced on a ring of ice, in a soda bottle or, as with its signature Earl Grey Caviar Martini, topped with a giant mound of fragrant, edible foam.
Room 309
Located in the The Pottinger hotel, this slender, dimly lit bar is secreted behind a nondescript door that requires a keycard to gain entry (obtained next door from The Envoy – if you ask nicely). The inventive list of cocktails are the work of superstar mixologist Antonio Lai, and include his ‘crystal’ Old Fashioned, drained of colour but still packing a punch.
Sevva
When it first opened in 2008, Sevva (pronounced ‘savour’) was the place to be seen, but now it’s mellowed into its role as a reliable, familiar place to take visitors to marvel at Hong Kong’s glittering business district from its stunning top-floor terrace.
Sugar
Hands-down the best place to get a drink for those who work in Eastern district. The highlight of this unpretentious spot is the sweeping view of the harbour and Kowloon from the outdoor terrace.
The Old Man
The literary-minded will embrace this art-deco bar themed after Ernest Hemingway. But first they’ll have to find it, down a flight of stairs in a narrow alley in Soho, behind an unassuming door. An abstract mural of the author makes for an apt focal point while sipping on craft cocktails named from his famous works.
