There was a long list of entrants for this category, but one clear winner emerged. Housed in a rejuvenated century-old teak house, with treatment rooms dotted around lotus ponds, The Oriental Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has a large fan base among Marco Polo Club members. In 2016, the group launched its first Spa Studio, with a focus on express treatments, cutting edge therapies such as collagen-enhancing facials and the Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio by Bastien Gonzalez – famed as Hollywood’s pedicurist to the stars.

Aman Spa at Amanoi (Vietnam)
Set on the shores of Vinh Hy Bay, Amanoi’s two Spa Houses focus on an immersive wellness programme encompassing movement, bodywork, spirituality and nutrition alongside more traditional spa treatments.
Aman Tokyo
With vertiginous views over Tokyo, this light-filled sanctuary offers eight treatment rooms focused on traditional Japanese kampo therapies, aroma steam rooms, a 30-metre indoor pool and fitness centre with yoga and pilates studios.
Banyan Tree Spa Sanya (Chinese Mainland)
From the beautiful mosaic-tiled waiting room to the eight treatment pavilions, the Banyan Tree Spa Sanya offers hydrothermal facilities and views over Luhuitou Bay. The signature treatment is the Tropical Rainmist with Bath and Steam.
Fivelements Bali (Indonesia)
Forming part of the eco-friendly, wellness-focused Fivelements Bali resort, the Beauty Sanctuary spa is rooted in nature, utilising plant-based and superfood products while preserving village remedies.
Six Senses Laamu (Maldives)
This beach-based spa overlooking the azure waters of the Laamu Atoll offers four uniquely designed couple’s treatment ‘nests’, four couple’s treatment pavilions and one ayurvedic treatment pavilion.
Six Senses Qing Cheng Mountain (Chinese Mainland)
The purity of Taoist principles have been infused into the design and treatment procedures of the spa at this Chengdu-based getaway.
Spa on the Rocks at Ayana, Bali (Indonesia)
Guests who climb the 115 steps to one of the two Spa on the Rocks pavilions will be rewarded with sea views, thalassotherapy (which employs seawater in its treatments) and signature spa treatments.
The Datai Langkawi (Malaysia)
Surrounded by the natural sounds and smells of the jungle, spa-goers at The Datai Langkawi can enjoy treatments that incorporate herbs and plants found in the surrounding rainforest, merged with traditional Ramuan Malay philosophies.

Spread over two floors, this luxurious city spa offers a traditional Turkish hammam, Moroccan rasul and Roman laconium rooms, while the holistic spa areas include vitality pools, ice fountains, steam rooms, saunas, and zen relaxation rooms.
Tria Spa at MGM (Macau SAR, China)
Located in Cotai’s new bewelled MGM Macau, the spa offers a taste of Moroccan hammams and Japanese bathhouses, along with the only So Sound Therapy in Macau, using vibrational oscillations to relax mind, body and soul.
