10 great movie, TV and music highlights onboard this month

Entertainment editor Kevin Ma offers 10 behind-the-scenes and contextual moments so you can get even more out of January’s inflight entertainment

Flying during January? With more than 200 films and 500 hours of TV onboard Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights, it’s hard to know what to watch first.

Here are the best moments, stories and trivia from this month’s onboard programming.

1) The supervillain in Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Julianne Moore reveals her unlikely inspiration for her supervillain character in Kingsman: The Golden Circle and describes acting opposite Sir Elton John on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon:

2) The painting of Loving Vincent

Based on 94 paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted feature film. See the complex process behind making this visually striking film here:

3) BTS meets the USA 

K-pop group BTS recently took the US by storm with a special promotional tour. See them meet Ellen Degeneres with hundreds of screaming fans in attendance below and catch Comeback Show – BTS DNA onboard this month.

4) The real Battle of the Sexes

In 1973, the world watched as 55-year-old Bobby Riggs challenged 29-year-old Billie Jean King to a tennis match known as ‘Battle of the Sexes.’ See archival footage from the real match below then see Emma Stone and Steve Carell recreate the match in Battle of the Sexes onboard this month.

5) Before Columbus: Kogonada’s love letter 

Before becoming a director, Kogonada was an academic who made video essays about his favourite directors. See his love letter to Japanese film legend Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story) – the main influence behind his directorial debut Columbus – below.

6) The song in The Miracles of the Namiya General Store

Tatsuro Yamashita’s Reborn, a song he created specially for this movie, plays a pivotal role in Japanese melodrama The Miracles of the Namiya General Stone. Watch Mugi Kadowaki (performing as Seri in the film) perform it here:

7) Jackie Chan vs light pole in Police Story 

Jackie Chan talks about the making of a crazy stunt at the end of Police Story. Catch the classic action film onboard this month, part of the new Made in HK section.

8) First glimpse of Ronny Chieng: International Student 

Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng takes the spotlight this month with Ronny Chieng: International Student. Chieng co-wrote and stars in this psuedo-autobiograpical comedy about his time as an international student in Australia. See the trailer here:

9) The mindfulness of Walk With Me

Walk With Me is a documentary about Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh and a soul-cleansing lesson in mindfulness that will put you at ease before a long journey. See the trailer below:
